“As a result, Professor Reiss and the Royal Society have agreed that, in the best interests of the society, he will step down immediately as director of education – a part-time post he held on secondment,” it said in a statement.
“He is to return, full time, to his position as professor of science education at the Institute of Education.”
The Royal Society reiterated that its position was that creationism had no scientific basis and should not be part of the science curriculum.
“However, if a young person raises creationism in a science class, teachers should be in a position to explain why evolution is a sound scientific theory and why creationism is not, in any way, scientific
t added that the society greatly appreciated the efforts of Prof Reiss, a biologist, in furthering its work in the important field of science education over the past two years and wished him well for the future.
Creationists take a literal interpretation of the Bible’s description of the origin of life and reject the Darwinian concept of evolution.
Prof Reiss, speaking at the British Association Festival of Science at the University of Liverpool, estimated that about one in 10 children was from a family which supported a creationist rather than evolutionary viewpoint.
He said his experience had led him to believe it was more effective to include discussion about creationism alongside scientific theories such as the Big Bang and evolution – rather than simply giving the impression that such children were wrong.

Eddie O’Gorman, chairman of the UK charity Children with Leukaemia, said: “There is now a clear case for immediate government action.
“Planning controls must be introduced to stop houses and schools being built close to high voltage overhead power lines.”
But Professor John Toy, Cancer Research UK’s Medical Director, said: “People who currently live or have lived near power lines in the past need not panic about this research. The triggers that cause childhood leukaemia are most likely a random course of events over which a parent has no control.
A spokesman from the Health Protection Agency said the study findings suggested that at least some of the increased leukaemia risk might be associated with factors other than electromagnetic fields.
Dr David Grant, of Leukaemia Research, said: “We recognise there is a lot of public anxiety and concern about living close to pylons and exposure to power-frequency magnetic fields.
“There is no reason why anyone should be advised to move house on the basis of these new results.”
There are around 7,000km of high voltage power lines involved in the transmission of electricity across England and Wales, and 21,800 steel pylons.

More than half of adults in a survey of 10 countries thought school science lessons should teach evolutionary theories alongside creationism.
Among those who knew of Darwinism, on average 53% felt other possible perspectives should also be taught.
The figure was 68% in Argentina, in the poll for the British Council, which promotes educational opportunities.
In Great Britain 60% felt this way. In Egypt, 27% said such theories should not be in science lessons at all.
The British Council, the UK’s international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations, is running a programme of activities under the banner Darwin Now.
This marks the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his work, On the Origin of Species.
There are exhibitions and learning resources in about 50 countries and in a variety of languages.
The learning materials vary but can be used without technical equipment, to make them as widely available as possible.

On the website, schools had been ranked on the average rating they got, from five for excellent to one for poor – not simply by how many votes they picked up.
Some people might have misunderstood what they had to do.
“When you rate, you need only click on one multicoloured coat,” the website explained.
So, for example, if you wish to rate the choir a four, you click on the fourth coat along in the row. You should not click coats one, two, three and four.”
But there were also claims that people not only repeatedly gave their own choir the highest rating, but also repeatedly gave a low rating to competitors.
In their “frequently asked questions”, the producers said the contest had been “far more popular than we anticipated”, with hundreds of votes per minute straining the database.
Richard Williams, who is in charge of the show’s website, told Radio 4 programme You and Yours that they were “caught short”.
“We’re a bit embarrassed that we couldn’t cope with the popularity of it,” he said.

On Saturday evening, Bangor girl Niamh Perry, 17, found out that she was not going to be Nancy.
She was voted off the BBC’s live show I’d Do Anything, where contestants are battling it out for a starring role in a new production of Oliver!
Now all eyes are on Rachel Tucker, 26, the other hopeful from Northern Ireland who goes ahead to the semi finals.
At the weekend, Five Nancys found themselves battling for four places in the semi final and Niamh found herself singing against Rachel in a nail-biting finale to win a
place.
They were asked to sing Another Suitcase in another Hall from Evita. Although she lost, Andrew Lloyd Webber was full of encouragement.
“Niamh, if I was casting Evita, I would seriously think of you for that role,” he told her, adding that he wouldn’t be surprised if she was up for a leading role by
the time she is 20 years old.
On Monday, Niamh’s father, Liam Perry, said she was “disappointed but excited about the future”.
He said he was “very proud” of his daughter.
“This has been a great adventure for a 17-year-old. She has loved every minute of it … she told me she wouldn’t have changed a thing. “She is coming home tonight to
take three A levels this week in Our Lady’s and St Patrick’s College, Knock. She is taking music, drama and sociology.”
rehearsals in London, Niamh still made time to study.
“We have a photograph of her sitting at the side of the stage in rehearsals with her books on her lap,” he said.
Despite the disappointment, he said it was good to hear someone of the stature of Lord Webber say that if he was casting Evita, he would be seriously considering
Niamh.
And he said that people from across Northern Ireland and from as far away as Australia and America had taken Niamh to their hearts, and he thanked them all.
Jessie Buckley, 18, from County Kerry in the Republic of Ireland is also among the handful of finalists left in the programme.
She has been performing since she was seven, when she starred in a school production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. She plays four instruments and is
delighted to be in the final.

The inquiry was announced after a large number of objections to the plans.
SSE said the development was needed in order to transfer green energy from proposed projects in the north of Scotland.
The Ramblers’ Association Scotland, John Muir Trust, National Trust for Scotland and Association for the Protection of Rural Scotland are combining resources to object to this proposal.
Davie Black, wild land campaigner for the Ramblers’ Association, said: “We are concerned about the effect this power line will have on the magnificent scenery of the Scottish Highlands.”
John Muir Trust policy officer Helen McDade added: “This inquiry needs to look at the big picture, the context within which this proposal lies.”
Meanwhile, Stirling Council has agreed to joint legal representation with Highland Council, Perth and Kinross Council and the Cairngorm National Park at the pre-inquiry stage.
Other meetings will take place on 25, 27 and 31 October in Inverness, Perth and Stirling.
The line from the Highlands to Central Scotland, proposed by Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE), would see 600 pylons built on a 137-mile route.
Meetings in Aviemore, Inverness, Perth and Stirling will set out how the inquiry proper will progress.
The inquiry, called by the Scottish Executive, will be held early 2007.
The pre-inquiry meetings also offer an opportunity for the developer, councils and pressure groups to outline their cases for or against the proposal.
The line would run from Beauly near Inverness to Denny near Falkirk, passing through the Cairngorm National Park and close to the Wallace monument in Stirling.
